These are not actually railway sleepers ; technically they should be called
bulk timbers because they are manufactured new and have never seen use
on a railway; but being so similar in size to the traditional used ones its
easier to think of them simply as New Sleepers.
New Oak Sleepers – These are almost totally regular blocks of wood of
the size described below, but about 10% of them have lightly chamfered
edges; as if a corner had been planed off to make it look more natural. This
is because some of these are machined from the edge of a large block of
timber, where the natural sides and curvature of the tree itself can be seen.
Sleepers New:
7ft 10 " long by 8" wide and 4" thick
(2.4m/2400mm x 200mm x 100mm)
Tanalised Pine Sleepers – These represent the best weight to durability
ratio of all our sleepers. Made of a simple lightweight pine, then
tanalised to preserve them against rot and decay.
These can be used in wet or dry environments and are very lightweight
and extremely easy to handle.
The green tinge of the tanalith treatment enhances their natural
appearance, and makes them easy to hide behind foliage.
